Couples meet in different ways.

Some meet at work, social events or activities. Others through mutual friends. Usually, it happens in a peaceful setting — not because of one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.

For Patience Carter and Alex Murray, both born and raised in Philadelphia, the horrific events that unfolded in the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, where 50 people were killed and another 53 wounded, brought them together.

They discovered hope amid the pain and love from a senseless tragedy.

Then, the mutual love for their favorite football team, the Philadelphia Eagles, sealed their future together with a dream-come-true wedding at Lincoln Financial Field.

Surrounded by family and friends, the wedding was held at the 50-yard line on August 25, 2019 and their journey to become Mr. and Mrs. became a three-part docu-series produced by Eagles Entertainment, entitled "Sincerely Patience."

"The best girls night ever," said Carter, describing the evening of June 11 and early morning of June 12. While on vacation she attended Latin Night at Pulse with her friend Tiara Parker, 21, and Parker's cousin Akyra Murray, 18, who is Alex's sister.

"We had a blast," said Carter. "And then at the very end of the night, waiting for Uber, that's when the gunshots started firing over the music."

She and her friends hid in a handicap stall with several other clubgoers trying to figure out what to do next as the sounds of gunfire continued to intermix with the screams of people.

But the gunman made his way into the bathroom.

"He was just firing at everything, and everything possible," she said. Carter was shot in both her legs. Parker and Akyra were also hit by gunfire.

The bullet that entered Carter's right thigh shattered her femur bone. For the next three hours, they were held hostage in the bathroom as the police talked to the gunman.

"After the second hour had gone past I was just pretty much praying to God to take the soul out of my body because I was in too much pain," said Carter.

When the police breached the bathroom wall at approximately 5 a.m., the long road to recovery for Carter began. Parker recovered from her injuries but Alex Murray lost his sister that night.

"She was an amazing young girl," said Murray as he remembered his sister, Akyra. "She was smart, always smarter than me."

The night of the shooting, Murray was driving up to see his sister after leaving work early in West Palm Beach. He was looking forward to spending some time with her.

"I got a call from my sister that she had got shot," he said. The call was lost and his attempts to call her back did not go through. While on the phone with his parents -- who also received a call from Akyra -- he followed speeding police cars which took him close to Pulse.

Murray was hoping to find the three of them and take them away but the police pushed everyone blocks away.

So he waited.

"We never found out about Akyra until almost two days later," he said. Police sent them to six different hospitals until the FBI told them the news.

"She was like, 'you know, we're dating now,'" said Murray, laughing as he explained how their relationship grew to the next level.

Carter said that she started falling in love about a month-and-a-half after Pulse. For him, it happened about a month later, when she came down Florida to visit him.

Eventually Carter moved to Florida where Murray proposed to her courtside during a timeout at a Miami Heat basketball game on March 27, 2018. It seemed their story touched a few people in the Heat marketing department who made the special moment happen.

Carter and Murray saw each other in passing a few times before the fateful morning of Pulse. She and Parker were best friends and would often hang out at the Murrays' home in Philadelphia.

"We just never really interacted too much with each other," Murray said, adding that he would see her at holiday dinners.

"We never really spoke to each other at all," said Carter.

The minute Carter woke up after her surgery, the first faces she saw were those of Murray and his mom and dad as they walked in the hospital room.

When Murray and Carter locked eyes with each other something happened that neither can explain.

"We just saw each other differently in that moment," she said.

From there they helped each other heal. They spent a lot of time reflecting on what had happened, talking about Akyra and talking how both their lives had changed.

When thinking about venues for their wedding, Lincoln Financial Field crossed their minds.

Murray played a high school football game at the Linc, but suffered a career-ending injury playing football in college. Carter thought a wedding on a football field would erase the memory of him being injured on one.

"I feel like God brought this idea to us," Carter said.

So she sent a heartfelt email to the Eagles organization asking to be married at the home of their favorite team.

According to Jen Kavanagh, Philadelphia Eagles Senior Vice President of Marketing and Media, once they learned more about Murray and Carter's unique story, the more they realized they had a special opportunity to help usher in a new chapter of their lives together.

"The way in which a tragedy could ultimately culminate into a relationship, and a love between two people who share that bond was really just something that kind of blew us away," said Kavanagh.

The Eagles hosted the wedding and then the reception at the Touchdown Club. The wedding bands were donated by Golden Nugget Jewelers. Other in-kind donations were made from corporate sponsors and vendors tied to the docu-series, as well.

Thursday night, the Eagles hosted a private screening of "Sincerely, Patience" at the NovaCare Complex, complete with a red carpet, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Seated in the front row of the auditorium were Carter and Murray, as they watched their wedding journey unfold in front of family and friends. As the the docu-series played, laughter, tears and applause filled the room.

Hope is what they both want people to get out of their story.

"I just want people to believe that they can make it in whatever situation they're going through, whatever their rock bottom is, whatever that darkest moment is," said Carter, sitting on stage with her husband.

"Anything is literally possible" if you keep positive and cling to your loved ones, she said.
