Crystal Palace 1-0 Newcastle United: Patrick van Aanholt stunner earns first win of 2020 Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:06 AM PST Patrick van Aanholt has scored more Premier League goals than any other Crystal Palace defender in the competition's history, overtaking Scott Dann (12) Crystal Palace secured their first win of 2020 thanks to Patrick van Aanholt's superb first-half free-kick which saw off visitors Newcastle. The victory also ended a run of three league defeats for Roy Hodgson's side who benefitted from yet another ragged display by the visitors. The Magpies' regular saviour Martin Dubravka had made two superb stops from Gary Cahill and Scott Dann before Van Aanholt found a way past him just before half-time with a glorious 20-yard strike. Jordan Ayew went close on a couple of occasions, one of which came off the foot of the post, while Belgian Christian Benteke really should have done better with a header from six yards out. Newcastle managed only two shots on target. Vicente Guaita was at full stretch to keep out a long-range effort from Joelinton and tipped over a fierce effort from Fabian Schar. And to round off a thoroughly disappointing day for the visitors, January signing Valentino Lazaro was shown a straight red in stoppage time for hauling down Wilfried Zaha, who was through on goal. The win moves Palace above Newcastle into 13th with 33 points. Newcastle drop down to 14th, with 31 points, seven clear of the drop zone. Palace attack thrives against NewcastleThanks to Van Aanholt's strike Palace are no longer the team with the fewest goals scored in the league. But having drawn level with Newcastle (also 24) they really should have ended the match well clear. The Eagles managed six shots on target in a one-sided first half - equalling their best in an entire game this season - with Dubravka thwarting them twice with two remarkable saves. Both Ayew and Zaha were allowed plenty of space against a Newcastle side set up with five at the back. Ayew in particular impressed, coming in from the right to produce seven efforts on goal - five of which were on target. The Ghanaian summer signing was inches away from ending his five-game drought when his low strike from 10 yards cannoned off the post before Newcastle's keeper denied him from similar range. As for Benteke, it was one of his better games but his first-half headed miss might play on his mind for a while longer. This was a better attacking display from Palace, but they played a Newcastle side in a generous mood. Joelinton fires another blank Joelinton's touchmap shows he only managed two touches in Palace's box (right) in the entire matchThat is now no goals in three matches for Steve Bruce's side, and the discussions over striker Joelinton's inclusion in the XI will become more heated. The Brazilian, signed for £40m in the summer, has scored only one goal in the league and this week his boss suggested the Brazilian was not a natural goalscorer but a "team player". There is little argument over the 23-year-old's workrate but, like Bruce also said, he needs to be more selfish. The forward did bring the travelling support to their feet with his brilliant first-half strike which was kept out by Guaita, but it is in the penalty area where the fans want him to impose himself. The touchmap above shows he only twice managed to get on the ball in the box, and even then it was near the edge. For how much longer will Bruce persist with him? Man of the match - Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace) Jordan Ayew found himself on the turf a lot because he was such a threat on the right - he was also very unlucky not to score'Maybe it's time to change' - reactionPalace boss Roy Hodgson: "It was hard to lose three in a row especially when in the last two we were hard done by. We dominated the game but I am disappointed we had to suffer towards the end. When it's 1-0 they are never out of the picture. "It's our first win in 2020. It was vitally important, and had we conceded in the last few minutes it would have been disastrous. That would have knocked us for six. "But it's a win that moves us up the table and away from the relegation zone. We never lost sight that this would be a dogfight and we wanted to stay ahead of the curve on that." Newcastle manager Steve Bruce: "The better team won. We have had decent possession, but we gave the ball away too cheaply especially when in good areas. "We didn't ask questions, maybe it is a time to change - we have to score to win a game. It was difficult with the conditions, but we have no complaints saying the better team won." On Lazaro's red card: "With 10 seconds to go, does the referee really have to send him off? Is a yellow not sufficient? But rules are rules, and we will abide by it. "He played very well today, we didn't find him enough - in wide areas, we ignored the lad. We needed to get it out to him, but he played very well. "Our biggest problem all season has been evident - we have to create more of a threat in the opponent's area. We have to look at it and analyse it. Maybe change is sometimes for the best." Van Aanholt: the best attacking defender? - statsPalace are at Brighton in the Premier League next Saturday (12:30 GMT) while the Magpies are at home to Burnley (15:00).
Bernie 2016 Wanted DNC to Change the Rules, Bernie 2020 Just Wants to Win Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:00 AM PST On its face, Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-VT) Wednesday night comment that "the person with the most votes should be the nominee" could not have been more mundane. But that answer, given during the Democratic debate in response to a question about whether the pledged-delegate leader should be the top of the ticket at the national convention, not only put Sanders at odds with the rest of the field, but also with Bernie Sanders, himself, four years ago. "It's a bit of flip flop from 2016," Josh Putnam, a political scientist who specializes in delegate selection rules, told The Daily Beast. "He was making the case four years ago that Hillary Clinton couldn't win the nomination without superdelegates, and the pledged delegates should decide."
Oklahoma City Orchestra League selects 2020 Show House Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:21 AM PST The Oklahoma City Orchestra League has selected the 47th Symphony Show House: a five-bedroom, nine-bath home with pool at 2737 Guilford Lane. The home, built in 2013 and remodeled, will present top interior designers with a "blank canvas" to transform into "an amazing home to visit," according to the nonprofit league, which raises money with the show house to support the Oklahoma City Philharmonic's extensive music education program. The Show House tour dates are May 2-17. "The league was founded in 1948 with the mission to educate, enrich, and inspire the community by supporting orchestral music and promoting volunteerism," the organization said in a news release. "The league proudly provides financial and volunteer support to the OKC Philharmonic. Volunteers work year round to support 18 educational programs reaching 35,000 children and adults in the OKC area and beyond. "More than just a home tour, the Symphony Show House is a vital source of charitable fundraising for the OKC Philharmonic. More than 144 schools are relying on the league and the OKC Philharmonic's programs to keep music alive in their classrooms and allow 10,000 students to attend free concerts each year. The 7,464-square-foot show home is listed for $2.25 million with the Wyatt Poindexter Group, of KW Luxury Homes International. Show House chairman is Julia Hunt. Design chairman is Tuesday Fay. They've since turned to a homebrewed solution. The counts and delegates will be calculated and assigned two ways: a paper "Math Poster" worksheet hung on the wall at the precinct locations, and an off-the-shelf Google Forms app loaded onto an iPad provided by the state party, according to publicly available caucus training slides prepared by the party. The party calls the Google system the "Caucus Calculator." Both the calculator system and the poster will be used to log caucusgoers and help calculate a candidate's viability at each location. Each candidate must meet a precinct-specific minimum threshold of support to be considered viable. Click here to read the full story. Adam Edelman 39m ago / 4:26 PM UTC For Nevada Republicans it's a normal SaturdayLAS VEGAS — While Democratic voters here will flock to caucus sites to express their preference in their party's nominating contest, Republican voters will go about their day as normal. That's because the Republican Party voted last year to cancel its caucus. The decision was made to help clear the path to re-election for President Donald Trump. By canceling its caucus, the party ensures that voters don't have the opportunity to formally put their support behind a different Republican candidate for president. Click here for the full story. NBC News 50m ago / 4:15 PM UTC Alex Seitz-Wald and Garrett Haake 52m ago / 4:13 PM UTC 'Taking no chances': Nevada Dems hire massive call center to avoid caucus meltdownLAS VEGAS — Nervous about another fiasco like Iowa's, Democrats here and nationally are going to extra lengths to try to avoid a breakdown in the caucus process that could delay results on Saturday. Nevada Democrats have hired a professional call center with 200 paid operators and dedicated reporting lines to help take in results from caucus sites around the state, diverging from Iowa where lightly trained volunteers manned the phones and reported chaos and jammed phoned lines after an app that was supposed to process most of the results malfunctioned. "We have been working around the clock to ensure that what happened in Iowa will not happen here, which is why we're taking no chances when it comes to reporting," Molly Forgey, spokesperson for the Nevada Democratic Party, told NBC News. She added that the steps taken should "ensure that our precinct chairs and site leads will be able to successfully report results on caucus day." Click here to read the full story. Sahil Kapur 55m ago / 4:10 PM UTC 5 things to watch in the Nevada caucuses: Can anyone stop Bernie Sanders?LAS VEGAS — Nevada kicks off a new phase of the Democratic presidential race Saturday as the first 2020 contest with an electorate that reflects the diversity of the party. It could be a knockout round for candidates who fail to attract a broad coalition of voters. Whether or not it causes some of them to exit, Nevada will signify to voters in critical upcoming contests who is viable and who isn't. Polls say Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. is the front-runner heading into the caucuses, with former Vice President Joe Biden, former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., businessman and philanthropist Tom Steyer and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., all in the hunt. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who is surging in national surveys and had a rocky debate this week, is skipping the first four states and won't be on the ballot here. Sen. Bernie Sanders had a message for President Putin and Russia after being briefed that the Kremlin is attempting to help his campaign. Adam Edelman 1h ago / 4:04 PM UTC Caucus chaos again? Experts fear vote-counting problems in NevadaLAS VEGAS — A new early-voting system, high turnout and questions about a never-before-used digital tool being used to process results could threaten the success of the Nevada Democratic caucuses on Saturday, election experts told NBC News. "I don't see how any technologist or any party official or any political scientist can promise that this will turn out OK," said Mark Lindeman, the director of science and technology policy for Verified Voting, a nonpartisan nonprofit group that advocates for election accuracy and transparency. "There are too many tools and procedures that are being rolled out, some at the last minute," he continued. "And my impression is that the people on the ground who are charged with implementing these procedures and using these tools are not confident they can do it." Lindeman added, "I hope that it goes better than Iowa, but it is definitely at risk for similar reasons." Adam Edelman and Jane C. Timm 1h ago / 4:02 PM UTC Sanders seeks to smooth Nevada union tensions as rivals pounceBernie Sanders on Thursday sought to ease tensions between his supporters and an influential Nevada union that exploded this week after the union publicly criticized his campaign's push for "Medicare for All." The fracas prompted a number of the Democratic presidential contenders competing with the Vermont senator for the nomination to jump to the union's defense, after it said it had come under "vicious" attacks from Sanders supporters. The public battle between Sanders supporters and Nevada's powerful culinary union, which represents 60,000 workers in the hospitality-industry dominated state, broke out after the union sent out a flyer Tuesday warning that Sanders' Medicare for All plan would "end Culinary health care." Adam Edelman 1h ago / 4:01 PM UTC Which Democratic candidate will win the Latino vote? Nevada is the first test.LAS VEGAS — José Ramirez used to go door to door preaching the word as a Jehovah's Witness. Now he's knocking on the doors of Latinos as a Bernie Sanders evangelist. It's his second time working on Sanders' campaigns, and he has stepped up his game, from calling potential voters on Sanders' behalf in 2016 to block walking in Latino-heavy East Las Vegas. "I will not let any opportunity pass by that I can [to] help elect Bernie," Ramirez said. Early voting began Saturday in Nevada ahead of the state's caucus on Feb. 22nd, which will give Democrats their first substantial feedback from Latino voters on their presidential candidates. While Latinos voted in Iowa and New Hampshire and efforts were made to increase participation, Nevada has a larger, far more active Latino electorate. Nevada has made itself a key part of the Democratic process, not only as the first-in-the-West caucus, but also by showing how Democrats could win by harnessing Latino votes.
| Six Nations 2020: Italy 0-17 Scotland - Hogg, Harris & Hastings with tries Posted: 22 Feb 2020 08:36 AM PST Captain Stuart Hogg's stunning first-half try was Scotland's first of the campaignSix NationsItaly (0) 0Scotland (5) 17Tries: Hogg, Harris, Hastings Cons: Hastings Scotland ran in three tries against Italy in Rome to earn their first win in six Six Nations games and ease the pressure on head coach Gregor Townsend. Captain Stuart Hogg's stunning solo effort was the Scots first of the campaign and was added to after the break by centre Chris Harris and - late on - fly-half Adam Hastings. Italy, searching for a first Six Nations win in 25 matches since beating Scotland in 2015, failed to breach a resolute defence and are rooted at the bottom of the table after three games. Scotland, though, can look forward to the visit of France on 8 March with renewed confidence, before ending their campaign against Wales in Cardiff six days later. Ugly, but a win is a winHaving won just one of their previous seven in the championship, this was a game that Scotland had to win, not just for their morale but for Townsend, who would have come under ferocious pressure had this one gone south. They won, but nobody was doing cartwheels on the full-time whistle. Harris, Hogg and Hastings, the try-scorers, all spoke in the low-key style of men who knew that Scotland have masses of work to do. And they do. This was ugly, but it was a 17-point win. Scotland are not in the business of turning their noses up at 17-point wins no matter how they are achieved. It was nervous out there. Scotland's recent problems in finishing the chances they created came back to bite them again early on when they worked it to Italy's line only for Magnus Bradbury to knock it on when a little more patience would surely have brought a score. Bradbury, it has to be said, went on to have a big game along with the outstanding Hamish Watson and Jamie Ritchie. Mistakes ruled. Scotland kicked out on the full, Italy got turned over on the floor. Hastings had a gimme three points, but missed the penalty from close-range, then put in a poor kick that was seized on by the Azzurri, who attacked through Mattia Bellini and Jayden Hayward. Hastings had a rough time of it, missing three kicks at goal on a fractious day. That Italian chance went when Scotland's scramble defence snuffed it out and back we went to the anxiety of two teams who have almost forgotten how to win game of this import. The thing was finally lit up by Hogg's moment of world class, a counter-attack that saw him getting the ball in his own half and running at pace at the retreating Italians. He accelerated between Luca Morisi and Sebastian Negri and then stepped outside Hayward, all of it done at breakneck speed. It was his 20th Test try and he's scarcely scored a better one. No way was he dropping it this time. In a repeat of his touch down for Exeter last weekend, Hogg hugged the ball to his chest and grounded it safely. Scotland thought they'd scored again soon after but Watson's pass to Sam Johnson went forward and Ali Price's finish was ruled out. Italy, playing a frenetic new style, carried a threat and bust Scotland open on a couple of occasions but couldn't find the accuracy when they needed it most. They had a chance to get on the board but Tommaso Allan's penalty came slapping back off an upright. Chris Harris barged over to double Scotland's leadBalm of victory soothes ScotsAnother Scottish chance went begging before the break when they lost control short of the line and, just after the interval, they coughed up another opportunity. That one was painfully close, Watson taking it up, Bradbury piling though in support and then popping it to Ritchie, who was in the act of scoring when Jake Polledri hit him hard and dislodged the ball from his grip. Italy's respite was relatively brief, though. Their exit was poor and once again they got done at the breakdown. Fifteen phases of grunt later, Harris battered his way through Matteo Minozzi to make it 10-0. It wasn't pretty - in fact it was gruesome - but it was effective. Hastings' challenging afternoon continued with a missed conversion and then a loose pass that handed Italy momentum. They came roaring downfield and once more the Scots were scrambling in their own 22 - and scrambling excellently. Just when it looked like the home team might get their breakthrough, Bradbury turned over ball and the danger passed. Just before the hour, Scotland should have put it to bed but Hogg went himself when he should have found Sean Maitland, who would have a fairly straightforward route to the line had the ball been put in his mitts. As a Test, it was massively flawed. So many unforced mistakes, so little quality. It was bottom of the table stuff in every sense. Scotland will breath a mighty sigh of relief having won it, but they'd better set aside a full day this week to pore over the errors they made, the chances they blew, the passes they forced, the kicks that went astray. Italy's woe carried on with Federico Zani, the substitute hooker, was binned for a dangerous tackle on Grant Gilchrist. Things went form bad to worse while Zani was away. With two minutes left on the clock, Italy launched a promising attack in pursuit of a losing bonus point score. They got into Scotland's 22 but their horrors on the floor did for them again when Gilchrist turned them over. The Scots countered and Hastings was put away to score with ease. He converted, with a drop goal, and the gap stretched out to 17. A Scottish win on the road, then. That's something Scotland have always found difficult no matter where they happen to be playing. Some desperately needed cheer amid difficult times, but this was a tough watch. Italy were poor and have fallen now to a 25th defeat in a row in the Six Nations. At least Scotland have the balm of a victory as they ready themselves for the arrival of France in a fortnight. Line-upsItaly: Hayward; Bellini, Morisi, Canna, Minozzi; Allan, Braley; Lovotti, Bigi (captain), Zilocchi, Zanni, Cannone, Polledri, Negri, Steyn. | Six Nations 2020: England v Ireland preview, team news & key stats Posted: 22 Feb 2020 07:53 AM PST The Farrell family are unique - JonesGuinness Six Nations: England v IrelandVenue: Twickenham Date: Sunday, 23 February Kick-off: 15:00 GMTCoverage: Listen live on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra; text commentary on BBC Sport website; watch highlights on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, online and BBC Sport app from 18:00 GMT. England captain Owen Farrell will seek to end the Grand Slam hopes of father Andy when his side face Ireland. Sunday's match at Twickenham will be the first time the pair have been in opposition since Andy Farrell was appointed Ireland head coach. If Ireland win they would make it three wins from three, secure a Triple Crown and maintain their Grand Slam hopes. World Cup finalists England revived their own title ambitions with a win over Scotland after losing to France. It will be England's first game at Twickenham since thrashing Ireland 57-15 in a World Cup warm-up match in August. But Ireland won on their last Six Nations visit in 2018, as they clinched the Grand Slam with a 25-14 victory on the final day. Farrell v Farrell - weird isn't it?Ireland scrum-half Conor Murray summed up the situation of father trying to beat son, when he said: "It's always going to be weird isn't it? "Sometimes he gives good insights into Owen's game that we might not have seen. "I've played against Owen and toured with him with the Lions. He's an incredible player and a really good decision-maker. "Even with knowledge of the way he plays, he's still able to pick the right options - that's what makes him really hard to defend and analyse." England hooker Jamie George said Andy Farrell had added a "touch of class" to Ireland's performances since taking over from Joe Schmidt after the World Cup. "Having worked with him a couple of times, he's got a great knowledge of defence, around attack and in the kicking game. He's also got a lot of clever ideas. "He adds that touch of class to them. He's a strong leader who speaks incredibly well and he'll have them jumping out of that changing room and ready to go. "That's added a huge string to their bow and we've seen that in the first two rounds. We're expecting a very physical Ireland team." Commentator's notesAndrew Cotter: A match of strong undercurrents with Farrell against Farrell and some Irish players now opening up about their former coaching regime. But the game is important enough, with Ireland going for the Triple Crown and England looking to maintain their challenge in a finely balanced Championship. Ireland have made just one change to their starting XV from the impressive win over Wales with Iain Henderson absent. While on the bench, the talented young back-row Caelan Doris is back after injury. England may have lost Mako Vunipola and George Furbank but are hardly weakened with Joe Marler coming in at loose-head prop and Elliot Daly switching to full-back. Eddie Jones can also call on the bruising presence of the returning Manu Tuilagi in midfield. These are two evenly matched sides but the fact that England are playing at Twickenham for the first time since the World Cup may be a deciding factor. View from both camps Andy Farrell denies Six Nations game with son Owen is most challenging week of his careerEngland head coach Eddie Jones: "Ireland are a very good team, extremely well coached. They are a team we respect a lot. "They will bring their usual physicality and under Andy Farrell they've opened up their game a little bit. "They are a tactically smart team. Conor Murray and Johnny Sexton, who have played 170 Tests between them, at nine and 10 will manage the game well. "We've got to make sure we match their physicality and their emotion." Ireland head coach Andy Farrell: "We know what type of game it is going to be, we know how England want to play. "They play hard on the gain-line, try to win quick ball, win the collisions, etc. We've seen them do that with great success over a number of years. So we know what's coming as far as that's concerned. "We want to turn up and express ourselves in that way as well." Team news - Bruised Lawes ready for Ireland England's Courtney Lawes suffered a bang to the head during training on ThursdayEngland flanker Courtney Lawes is ready to play despite suffering a nasty black eye after a collision in training. Lawes, who celebrates his 31st birthday on Sunday and will equal World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson's mark of 84 caps, said it would not be a problem. "It's just a boo boo," said Lawes. "Nothing too crazy. It's all fine... just a clash, my head on something, not sure what. "I'm hoping it will go down a bit. It's all right - I got through training." England have made four changes in personnel and two positional switches. Lawes, Marler, Tuilagi and Ben Youngs come in for Lewis Ludlam, Mako Vunipola, Furbank and Willi Heinz respectively, while Daly switches to full-back and Jonathan Joseph moves to the wing. Ireland's only change is in the pack where Devin Toner replaces Henderson, who misses the match because of family reasons. | Oddsmaker: Sanders 2020 Dem favorite, Bloomberg up, Biden and Warren sink Posted: 22 Feb 2020 01:19 AM PST The political oddsmakers have good news for former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and more bad news for former Vice President Joseph R. Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts in their latest analysis of who has the best shot at capturing the Democratic presidential nomination. The handicappers with Bovada, an online sports betting website, give Mr. Bloomberg +200 odds of winning the primary race — putting him just behind Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, who is the odds-on favorite at +125 after finishing second in the Iowa caucuses and first in the New Hampshire primary. That marks a big jump for Mr. Bloomberg, who had +1000 odds at the beginning of the year. Mr. Biden over the same period of time has gone from a +200 betting favorite to +755 after a pair of underwhelming performances in the opening contests. Ms. Warren, meanwhile, has cratered, falling from +450 on Jan. 1 to +6600 this week. That puts her behind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the party's 2016 presidential nominee, who comes in at +2000 but is not currently a candidate. Sign up for Daily Newsletters |
Trump dismisses report of Russian meddling in 2020 election Posted: 21 Feb 2020 11:58 PM PST Russian President Vladimir Putin meets President Trump last June in Japan. An intelligence assessment found that Russia is interfering in the 2020 primaries and the general election. Russian President Vladimir Putin meets President Trump last June in Japan. An intelligence assessment found that Russia is interfering in the 2020 primaries and the general election. Photo: Susan Walsh / Associated Press 2019Trump dismisses report of Russian meddling in 2020 election President Trump said Friday that a disclosure by American intelligence officials that Russia was again meddling in a presidential election in his favor was merely another partisan campaign against him, dismissing the warning as a hoax cooked up by rivals. "Another misinformation campaign is being launched by Democrats in Congress saying that Russia prefers me to any of the Do Nothing Democrat candidates who still have been unable to, after two weeks, count their votes in Iowa," Trump tweeted. "Hoax number 7!" The intelligence assessment, delivered last Thursday to lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee, determined that Russia is planning to interfere in the 2020 primaries as well as the general election. But the way it was delivered angered some Republicans, and the attendance of Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, the chairman of the committee who led the impeachment proceedings, particularly angered Trump. The president's decision to remove Joseph Maguire, the acting director of national intelligence, and install Richard Grenell, the ambassador to Germany and a fervent loyalist, was also seen as a direct outcome of the briefing. On Thursday evening, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, an ally and a vocal opponent of impeachment, was one of the candidates under consideration as a permanent successor. By Friday morning, Collins said he was not interested. Trump has a long history of discarding assessments made by intelligence agencies that he has deemed unfair or unflattering. Multiple intelligence groups have determined that Russia meddled in the 2016 election, and, before the 2018 midterms, delivered warnings that Russia was prepared to do it again. Early in his presidency, Trump grudgingly accepted those assessments before falling back on personal assurances from President Vladimir Putin of Russia. "He said he didn't meddle," Trump said in November 2017. "I asked him again. You can only ask so many times. Every time he sees me, he says, 'I didn't do that.' And I believe, I really believe, that when he tells me that, he means it." Since then, Trump, with the assistance of his Justice Department, has moved to retaliate against the intelligence community rather than Putin: A federal prosecutor is scrutinizing how the intelligence officials assessed Russia's 2016 election interference, targeting the former CIA director John Brennan in particular. On Friday, Trump tweeted that he had a list of four candidates to succeed Grenell, and that he would announce a decision in the coming weeks. Katie Rogers is a New York Times writer.
