Browns WR Landry has hip surgery, expected to play in 2020

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 10:26 AM PST

AP Published 9:34 a.m. MT Feb. 20, 2020

CLEVELAND (AP) â€" Browns Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry elected to have hip surgery after initially opting not to have the operation.

Landry was bothered by his hip all last season, but still finished with a team-leading 83 catches for 1,1174 yards and six touchdowns. He visited a specialist after the season and decided not to have the procedure before changing his mind after playing with pain in the Pro Bowl.

The Browns said Landry's surgery was performed on Tuesday in Minnesota by Dr. Christopher Larson.

Landry had estimated he would be sidelined six to eight months if he had the surgery. However, a Browns spokesman said the team expects Landry to make a complete recovery "for the 2020 season.”

Landry announced his surgery with an Instagram post.

“I felt like if I got together with the team doctors, got together with my doctors, that we could formulate a plan for this offseason to be able to manage me again throughout the year to be able to make it through the season,” he said.

“Going into Pro Bowl, given that I was off three weeks, and thinking that I was going to feel better and then playing in the game â€" which obviously wasn’t really a game, we were just jogging around, having fun â€" and I realized how much pain I was in from even just doing that.

“I was kinda happy that I went to Pro Bowl, that I did Pro Bowl because that was more of an indication of why I needed the surgery.”

Larson said on Landry's video posting that he repaired the cartilage issue by shaving it. Landry said it wasn’t microfracture surgery, which would have required a longer recovery.

“He’s gonna feel mechanically this works better,” Larson said.

Landry has been with the Browns since 2018 when he came over in a trade from the Miami Dolphins. The 27-year-old had at least 80 catches in each of his six seasons. Landry had a career-high 112 receptions and nine TDs in 2017. He has not missed a game in his career.

The quality gap between mainstream and luxury vehicles has shrunk so much that one of the most closely followed auto industry reviewers no longer breaks them into separate categories.

Consumer Reports on Thursday revealed its 2020 Top Picks, its annual list of the best vehicles you can buy. And for the first time, the product-testing website named 10 winners across four price ranges, rather than splitting them into luxury and non-luxury models or dedicating awards to specific body styles.

That's because mainstream vehicles' interiors have become more sumptuous, ride handling has improved, advanced safety systems have become common and reliability has spiked.

"We’re seeing this big merge of luxury-branded vehicles with just normal vehicles. They’re overlapping incredibly," said Jake Fisher, director of auto testing for Consumer Reports. "You can get a lot of luxury, quiet, comfort, all that, with the normal non-luxury-branded vehicles, and the luxury-branded vehicles are marching down-market too with some of their offerings."

Luxury vehicles, he said, are more of a status symbol than ever, as evidenced by mainstream brands like Subaru, Mazda and Kia making the Top 10 on the Consumer Reports Car Brand Report Card for 2020. They beat luxury brands like Land Rover, Acura and Cadillac.

"You don't have to pay a lot of money" to get a great vehicle, Fisher said.

Of the 10 Top Picks, Toyota and its luxury brand, Lexus, snagged five wins, demonstrating the brand's even mix of reliability, safety and general satisfaction. Subaru, which scored two Top Picks, was the only other automaker with more than one win. (See the full list below.)

IIHS Top Safety Picks: These 23 cars, SUVs are the safest new vehicles of 2020

The Tesla Model 3 also earned Consumer Reports' Top Pick designation for the first time.

Of the 33 automotive brands tested, Porsche took the top spot, while Hyundai luxury brand Genesis came in second and Subaru third. Fiat landed at the bottom of the list, and Mitsubishi was second to last. (The full list is below.)

A big change Consumer Reports made this year was that vehicles must offer automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection as standard technology if they want to be considered for a Top Pick. In 2020, about 61% of models offer it as standard, compared with 38% in 2019, according to Consumer Reports.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also recently made a similar move, requiring the technology as standard to receive its Top Safety Pick+ designation.

Both organizations said pedestrian detection systems are critical to help combat the nation's pedestrian safety crisis.

2020 Consumer Reports Top Picks

Under $25,000

Toyota Corolla. Testers cited the compact car's ride handling, efficiency and technology.

$25,000-$35,000

Subaru Forester: This small boxy SUV won praise for its "practical design, high owner satisfaction and impressive fuel economy."

Subaru Legacy: Recently redesigned, this midsize sedan has "a strikingly smooth ride," standard four-wheel-drive and a roomy interior.

Toyota Prius: This hybrid and its plug-in hybrid sibling, known as the Prius Prime, earned plaudits for exemplary fuel efficiency and excellent reliability.

$35,000-$45,000

Kia Telluride: This three-row SUV, which made its debut in 2019, earns another honor after already receiving the North American Utility of the Year and the MotorTrend SUV of the Year awards. It offers "a compelling blend of comfort, features, space and capability for the money."

Honda Ridgeline: This mid-size pickup trails competitors like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado in sales, but it's a good buy for anyone looking for strong fuel economy, flexibility and good handling, according to Consumer Reports.

Toyota Avalon: This large sedan body style may be falling out of favor, but this vehicle achieved a "near-perfect score for ride comfort" and has the highest reliability of any sedan in the publication's ratings.

$45,000-$55,000

Lexus RX: Considered to be the first midsize luxury crossover when it debuted in the late 1990s, this vehicle is still going strong. It offers "smooth power delivery, plentiful amenities and proven reliability."

Tesla Model 3: This electric sedan is on this list for the first time due to its "thrilling driving experience" and "high-tech vibe," though Consumer Reports expressed concern that the vehicle's optional Autopilot system can lull drivers into a false sense of security.

Toyota Supra: Revived after about two decades off the market, this sports car was made in partnership with BMW. Its strong engine, solid fuel economy and exceptional handling stood out.

Trump beats every 2020 Democrat in head-to-head matchups except Sanders: Poll

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 09:50 AM PST

Every Democratic contender falls short of defeating Trump in the 2020 election except Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a new poll shows.

Data released by Emerson College on Wednesday placed President Trump ahead of all Democratic candidates in a general election matchup, consistently earning 51% of the vote. The worst-performing Democrat in a head-to-head matchup was former Vice President Joe Biden, earning only 48% of the vote compared to Trump's 52%.

One of Biden's central arguments has been electability, claiming that he has the best chance to defeat President Trump in 2020. Biden has since contradicted himself, saying last week that the Democratic Party could "run Mickey Mouse against this president and have a shot."

However, Sanders came out on top in the poll, earning 51% of the vote over Trump's 49%. The poll was conducted before the Democratic debate in Nevada on Wednesday, where nearly every Democratic challenger to the socialist said Trump would win reelection if he were nominated.

"We shouldn't have to choose between one candidate who wants to burn this party down and another candidate who wants to buy this party out. We can do better," said former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. "Let's put forward somebody who's actually a Democrat."

The poll also found President Trump with a 48% approval rating, 2% higher than the RealClearPolitics average. 44% expressed disapproval with the Trump administration, falling 4% since the organization's survey last month.

The survey polled 1,250 respondents from Feb. 16-18 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

In the spotlight: "Hindsight is 2020" at Brave New Workshop

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 08:40 AM PST

    Brave New Workshop

"Hindsight Is 2020," the latest offering from the Twin Cities' premier sketch troupe, is being billed as a retrospective from the past decade, but the material in this brisk collection feels fresh, especially with the four-person cast updating old bits with references to the coronavirus and at least one "OK, boomer." Republicans, particularly Vice President Mike Pence, take a beating, but routines about the downside of Olive Garden's promise of never-ending breadsticks and a musical parody of "West Side Story" will please spectators on both sides of the political fence. Lauren Anderson's "paper pirate," who waxes nostalgic about the days of toilet paper while sporting an upside-down eyepatch, may be recycled, but her performance is timeless. There is no centrist Democrat running for president in 2020

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 08:28 AM PST

Even before last night's debate, the general consensus of the chattering class seemed to be that Democrats were in quite the bind: After the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, Vermont Senator Bernie SandersBernie SandersBiden leads Sanders by single digits in South Carolina: poll Pro-Trump super PAC hits Biden with new Spanish-language ad in Nevada Biden will go after Bloomberg, Sanders at Las Vegas debate, aides say MORE, who calls himself a "Democratic Socialist," has now established himself as the front runner for the party's presidential nomination, and could, if he soldiers on and wins the nomination, drag down the ticket and the party because he is "too far left."

Well, clearly, that's true. Sanders IS "too far left" for an Electoral College majority, and will most assuredly lose his bid for the presidency (and drag down down-ballot Democrat candidates with him) if he wins the party's presidential nomination. But the tough part for the establishment leaders of the national Democratic Party is this: Their concerns over a potential Sanders nomination victory are real, and accurate … but totally irrelevant.

Why? Because every single one of the candidates left to compete for the nomination after New Hampshire is "too far left" for an Electoral College majority of the country. That's right. Sanders and his Senate colleague from Massachusetts, Elizabeth WarrenElizabeth Ann WarrenBiden leads Sanders by single digits in South Carolina: poll 2020 Democratic candidates support Las Vegas casino workers on debate day Sanders takes lead in new Hill/HarrisX poll MORE, are not the only leftists in the field. Minnesota Sen. Amy KlobucharAmy Jean Klobuchar2020 Democratic candidates support Las Vegas casino workers on debate day Democratic senators ask DOJ watchdog to expand Giuliani probe What to watch in the debate tonight MORE, former Vice President Joe BidenJoe BidenBiden leads Sanders by single digits in South Carolina: poll Pro-Trump super PAC hits Biden with new Spanish-language ad in Nevada Biden will go after Bloomberg, Sanders at Las Vegas debate, aides say MORE, former South Bend mayor Pete ButtigiegPeter (Pete) Paul ButtigiegBiden leads Sanders by single digits in South Carolina: poll 2020 Democratic candidates support Las Vegas casino workers on debate day What to watch in the debate tonight MORE, and even former New York mayor Michael BloombergMichael Rubens BloombergBiden will go after Bloomberg, Sanders at Las Vegas debate, aides say Sanders takes lead in new Hill/HarrisX poll Bloomberg campaign warns of 'insurmountable' Sanders lead if moderates split votes MORE are also far to the left of the American mainstream.

For instance, Buttigieg joins Sanders and Warren in supporting free college tuition for just about everyone who wants to go; he only breaks with them in thinking that the very wealthiest of families probably shouldn't rely on taxpayers to fund their children's college years. And, like Sanders and Warren, he wants the government far more involved in healthcare – not through their "Medicare for All" plan, but through a "public option" (read: taxpayer-funded, government-controlled healthcare) that, he believes, would drive private health insurance companies out of business, and leave everyone on government health care plans as a result, rather than mandating their movement from private to government health insurance.

So the end result is the same – no more private health insurance, and everybody gets his or her health care from the government. If we're all going to end up at the same place, does it really matter how we get there? Buttigieg isn't the only secret leftist among the remaining candidates, either. Klobuchar opened her campaign with a call for a trillion-dollar infrastructure spending plan. She wants to abolish capital punishment, raise taxes, raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, eliminate the Electoral College, restrict the First Amendment, reduce America's energy independence and economic growth by ending new oil and gas leases on federal land and ending offshore drilling, legalize marijuana, and provide amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg wants to hike the minimum wage, massively restrict 2nd Amendment rights, raise taxes on individuals and corporations, and create special taxes on the wealthy – a 5 percent surtax on income over $5 million per year.

About the only thing I've left out is that at the first Democratic debate of the cycle, in Miami, on June 26th, all ten presidential contenders on stage raised their hands to answer that they, too, would support changing current law to provide taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits to illegal immigrants. And now we come to the sad realization – it's tough to call a policy agenda "extreme" when most of the adherents of one of the nation's two major parties have embraced it. So it may not be "extreme." But it's still accurate to call it crazy left-wing stuff.

So, have no fear, leaders of the Democratic Party's establishment, and stop, stop, stop all your worrying that crazy Bernie Sanders is going to win your nomination and tank your party's chances in the fall. All your candidates are crazy leftists running on crazy, left-wing policy agendas that will be soundly rejected by the American people in November. Prepare for another four years of President TrumpDonald John TrumpFed saw risks to US economy fading before coronavirus spread quickened Pro-Trump super PAC hits Biden with new Spanish-language ad in Nevada Britain announces immigration policy barring unskilled migrants MORE.

Ozzy Osbourne's 2020 North American No More Tours 2 has been canceled to allow the metal icon to continue to recover from various health issues he's faced over the past year.

Osbourne was scheduled to perform at Ak-Chin Pavilion on Thursday, July 23, a date that had already been rescheduled from 2019.

This decision was made to accommodate fans who’ve been holding tickets for rescheduled shows and have been asked to change plans, some multiple times.

Following promotional obligations for his new "Ordinary Man" album (due Feb. 21), Osbourne plans to head to Europe for additional treatments.

    'I've had a (expletive) year'

In a press release, the singer said, "I’m so thankful that everyone has been patient because I’ve had a (expletive) year. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get to Switzerland for treatment until April and the treatment takes six-eight weeks."

Osbourne added, “I don’t want to start a tour and then cancel shows at the last minute, as it’s just not fair to the fans. I’d rather they get a refund now and when I do the North American tour down the road, everyone who bought a ticket for these shows will be the first ones in line to purchase tickets at that time.”

How to get a refund from Ticketmaster

Refunds are available at the original point of purchase, including Ticketmaster. All refunds, including fees, will be returned directly to the credit card used.

Ticketholders who purchased “No More Tours 2” tickets will have first access to tickets when the next tour is announced.

Yankees’ 2020 single game tickets for regular season on sale | How to buy tickets to watch Gerrit Cole, Aaron Judge

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 06:53 AM PST

The 2020 MLB season is a little over a month away, and preparations for it are already underway.

The players and coaches are getting ready in spring training, and the ticket offices are getting warmed up back home, too.

The Yankees are opening single game tickets to their 2020 home games at Yankee Stadium on Thursday with a Mastercard exclusive presale at Yankees.com through its partnership with Ticketmaster, the club announced on Thursday. That sale begins at 10 a.m. ET, while general public single game ticket sales begin on Monday, February 24.

Fans who do not have a Mastercard and want to buy tickets prior to Monday's sale opens can find them on StubHub and SeatGeek.

Though there is a bit to go until the regular season begins, it's not too early for line-up speculation. Here is NJ Advance Media's Brendan Kuty's early look at how the 2020 Yankees look on Opening Day:

Wade feels like a lock, too, because he's the only one that can truly back up Torres at shortstop. Also helps that he's lefty and plays the outfield. The final spot could come down to Ford and Clint Frazier — and maybe Thairo Estrada. With 26 players instead of a 25-man active roster, the final bench spot doesn't need to be as flexible as it used to be. Wade has that covered. Ford represents a true power threat off the bench from the left side. Frazier could provide that from the right side, and he's outfield depth. Would the Yankees consider the backup first base job covered because they have Andujar and LeMahieu?

Astros scandal whistleblower Mike Fiers says he does not need extra protection in 2020

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 05:59 AM PST

What I’m Hearing: Aaron Judge doesn’t hold back when asked about the Astros. USA TODAY

On Sunday, during the second of two news conferences in which Rob Manfred defended his office's investigation and punishment of the Houston Astros' cheating scheme, MLB's commissioner vowed to protect Mike Fiers in 2020.

Fiers, a former Astros starter who is now with the Oakland Athletics, revealed details of the electronic sign-stealing scandal in November by going on the record with The Athletic and publicly revealing the scheme. Due to some players around the league potentially harboring negative feelings toward a whistleblower, Manfred said "we will take every possible step to protect Mike Fiers wherever he is playing, whether it's Houston or somewhere else."

But the 34-year-old doesn't believe any extra security measures are necessary.

"I don't know how they would," Fiers told The Athletic on Wednesday when asked whether MLB had contacted him about receiving extra protection throughout the 2020 season. "I'm not asking for extra security. I'm here to play baseball and I can defend myself, if anything. We do have National League games and I'm going to have to get into the box (to hit) just like everybody else. It's part of the game. If they decide to throw at me, then they throw at me. There's nothing much you can do about it."

'PEOPLE NEED TO SPEAK THEIR TRUTH': Even with Gerrit Cole in the room, Yankees players continue to rip Astros

Fiers won't be at risk as much because he won't be in the batter's box often as an American League pitcher. The same cannot be said of his former Houston teammates.

"It's the same with those guys (the Astros)," Fiers told The Athletic. "They've got to go in there hoping to play the game of baseball and if they get hit, they get hit. The consequences are going to be what it is."

The A's host the Astros from March 30-April 1 and head to Houston for a three-game set between April 24-26.

Yankees’ lineup, bench projection for 2020: Mike Tauchman or Giancarlo Stanton in LF? Who’s 26th man?

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone will have some roster decisions to make before Opening Day.Andrew Mills | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

TAMPA — Just start the season already!

Camp is barely a week old, but that's probably how plenty of Yankees fans feel right about now.

Alas, there are still 31 spring training games to play before Opening Day.

But, because it's never too soon to speculate, here's our way-too-early projections of the lineup and bench.

    1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B

    2. Aaron Judge, RF

    3. Gleyber Torres, SS

    4. Giancarlo Stanton, DH

    5. Gary Sanchez, C

    6. Brett Gardner, CF

    7. Luke Voit, 1B

    8. Gio Urshela, 3B

    9. Mike Tauchman, LF

  • Boone has been consistent regarding Giancarlo Stanton's role. He doesn't know what it will be, exactly. At the moment, it feels to me more like the Yankees are leaning toward letting Stanton DH more than play the field. A lot of that has to do with the emergence of Tauchman, who might be their best outfield defender and who brings another much-needed lefty bat into a righty-heavy lineup.
  • Could see spots 3-5 flip at any given time, depending on who's hot and on the matchups. Torres feels like the natural choice at No. 3, compared to Stanton and Sanchez.
  • Ford hit well late last year but remember: Voit's first half was nearly All-Star worthy. But can Voit stay healthy?
  • Bench

    Kyle Higashioka, C

    Miguel Andujar, Utility

    Mike Ford, 1B

    Tyler Wade, Utility

  • Boone has talked repeatedly of Higashioka and getting him a lot of time on the plate — Sanchez will need his rest. Though the Yankees brought in Erik Kratz, Chris Iannetta and Josh Thole, this isn't a competition.
  • The battle for the 26th spot is going to be interesting. Higashioka and Andujar feel like the only locks.
